The son of 1913 Fitzroy premiership player Jim Toohey, Jack Toohey joined the Roys from North Carlton and, after debuting in 1947, went on to play 57 VFL games and score 12 goals for the club. He spent the 1950 season captain-coaching Howlong before returning to Fitzroy for a season and a half. A half back flanker, he was enormously dependable and boasted great pace and good skills of anticipation.
Half way through the 1952 season Toohey joined St Kilda for whom he added a final half a dozen games before leaving the VFL scene behind. In 1953 he was appointed captain-coach of VFA club Brighton where he played 19 games and scored 11 goals to round off his playing career.
