Jason Love commenced his senior football career with VFA first division side Port Melbourne in 1984. After playing 18 games and kicking 56 goals for the year he was picked up by Essendon, but proved unable to break into the seniors, whereupon he was transferred to North Melbourne. He struggled to establish himself with the Kangas, making just 45 senior appearances and scoring 69 goals from 1986 to 1989. He fared somewhat better at Sydney, at least initially, topping the club’s goal kicking list in 1991 with 52 goals. He played just twice the following season, however, after which he retired.
Love was later the centre of controversy when he was suspended from football for eight years for his part in a massive brawl which ruined the 2004 AFL Cairns grand final between North Cairns, coached by Love, and Port Douglas.
