Solid overhead, and a fine kick, Jeff Hogg was perfectly suited to play full forward, which he did in most of the 184 V/AFL games in his career. He joined Richmond from Waverley High School and played under nineteens and reserves football before making his senior debut in 1986. Whilst in the under nineteens he played in the 1985 premiership team. Nicknamed 'Hedge', he headed the Tigers' goal kicking list In 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992 and 1993. He enjoyed a particularly good run of form in 1991 and was chosen to represent Victoria against Tasmania in Hobart. He also ran third in the club's best and fairest count the same year, his highest ever placing, while his season's tally of 68 goals was also a personal best.

At the end of a 1993 season which had seen him skipper the Tigers, Hogg and the club could not agree terms on a new contract with the result that, after 144 games and 306 goals in the yellow and black, he was traded to Fitzroy. Whilst still capable of producing good football he was also increasingly impeded by injury as a result of which he only played 40 games and kicked 41 goals for the Lions in three seasons.
