Jim Haines was a prominent player for East Perth during the club’s decade of frustration, the 1960s, when the side contested half a dozen grand finals and lost them all. Haines himself took part in the losses to Perth in 1966-7-8 and West Perth in 1969. A reliable defender who was strong overhead, he won the Royals’ fairest and best award in 1968.
After playing 106 WANFL games and kicking two goals for East Perth between 1965 and 1970 Jim Haines crossed to South Melbourne in the VFL. He spent the 1971 and 1972 seasons with the perennially struggling Swans, making 19 senior appearances and registering a couple of goals.
