Geelong’s Jim Knight was a diminutive but highly aggressive rover who bored in hard for the ball and typically used it well. He was known within the club for being a particularly hard trainer, and was extremely fit as a consequence, capable if required of remaining on the ball all match. From 1939 to 1941 he played 42 VFL games for the Cats and scored 54 goals. When Geelong went into recess owing to the war in 1942 Knight, who was undergoing military training at the time, was allowed to transfer to Carlton, where he added 15 games and seven goals over the course of that season and the next. In October 1943 he was killed while on active military service in New Guinea.
