Joe Harrison was a much admired, slim, high leaping half back flanker and later centre half back who gave Essendon consistently effective service in 64 VFL games in 1919, 1923 and from 1925 to 1927. Originally from Essendon Juniors, he lined up on a half back flank in the Dons’ 8.15 to 6.10 challenge final victory over Fitzroy in 1923. The imposing nature of his performances toward the end of his time with Essendon is evidenced by a club best and fairest win in 1926, and interstate representation for Victoria in 1926 as well as at the 1927 Melbourne carnival.
Following his VFL career Harrison played for Hamilton for several years, and then made a couple of appearances and scored one goal for Brunswick in the VFA in 1932.
