Whilst at Scotch College between 1968 and 1971 John Hendrie earned a reputation as a highly talented sports person, particularly in football and cricket. Ultimately it was football which won the battle for his affections and he was recruited by Hawthorn for whom he made his debut in the opening round of the 1972 season. He soon bedded down, becoming a permanent fixture in the senior team, mainly across half forward but also on occasion as a ruck-rover. In the Hawks' 1976 grand final defeat of North Melbourne his poor kicking for goal - he ended the match with 2.8 to his name - did not diminish the importance of his all round contribution and he was universally listed among his side's best players. Hendrie later played in Hawthorn's 1978 flag win as well.

A good mark and penetrative left foot kick John Hendrie was selected to represent Victoria in 1974 but had to withdraw owing to injury. He later represented the Big V in 1977 and 1978. His Hawthorn career comprised 197 VFL games from 1972 to 1982 during which he kicked 254 goals. After leaving the Hawks he relocated to Sydney where he threw in his lot with North Shore, ultimately earning selection on a half forward flank in the club's official 'Team of the Century'.
