John Lord had already joined Melbourne when he was loaned out to Footscray in the VFA in 1920. He did not play in the Tricolours’ winning grand final team that year, however, and indeed only made three appearances all season

The opening round of the 1921 season saw Lord making his VFL debut with Melbourne, and he went on to play 24 games and score seven goals in three years. The ensuing three seasons saw him add 30 games and 18 goals to his respective career tallies with St Kilda. The remainder of that career took place in the VFA, initially with Williamstown, where he played 17 games and kicked 17 goals in 1927, and then as captain-coach of Prahran from 1928 to 1931, where he made a total of 67 appearances and notched 95 goals.

In 1931 Lord was chosen to represent the VFA in a match against New South Wales, during which he sustained a serious knee injury which brought the curtain down on his career.
