Kelvin Matthews was strongly built and ultra courageous, in similar vein to his more famous brother Leigh. He revelled in wet conditions, and could be a danger to friend and foe as he hurtled through packs in pursuit of the ball. Typically used as a centreman, he was a member of Hawthorn’s losing grand final team in 1975 as well as the winning combination a year later. He had a keen eye for goal, and in one match against Fitzroy in 1978 he booted eight majors. His career at the Hawks spanned the period from 1972 to 1978, in which time he played 97 VFL games and registered 99 goals.

Midway through the 178 season Kelvin Matthews crossed to Geelong and was a handy player in 58 games in which he kicked 70 goals, before retiring in 1982.
