A gifted athlete who excelled at school in rowing, sprinting, long jump and high jump amongst other things, Lew Massey crossed from his native Tasmania to Melbourne Football Club at the age of 17, having represented a Southern Tasmanian side against the Redlegs a year earlier. Playing his first VFA game in 1890, Massey was a regular fixture in the Melbourne side until 1897, the inaugural VFL season, during which he played eight games.
Upon hanging up the boots, Massey joined the club's committee.
