After playing just half a dozen senior games for Claremont in 1994 Mark Gale was drafted by Fremantle ahead of the club’s debut season in the AFL. Initially, he struggled to break into the team on a regular basis, but from 1997 he became a first choice senior player. When not selected by the Dockers he continued to play for Claremont, except for the 1999 season when he played two games for South Fremantle.

The 2000 season brought a sudden and sharp dip in both form and fitness resulting in his being de-listed and nominating for the draft. He was picked up by St Kilda for whom he played 13 games and kicked three goals in 2001 to add to the 71 games and 18 goals posted with the Dockers. His various stints with Claremont saw him play a total of 54 games and boot 23 goals.
