Pat Fricker was captain of Collingwood in 1944, his final season with the club. Given that he was never exactly sure of his place in the side, this was quite a noteworthy achievement. Between 1935 and 1944 he played just 71 VFL games for the Magpies and kicked 18 goals. Collingwood played in four successive grand finals during Fricker’s career but he played only in the last of them, a loss to Melbourne in 1939.
