Recruited by Hawthorn from De La Salle Peter Murnane gave useful service to the Hawks in 80 VFL games between 1976 and 1981. He kicked 56 goals. At the end of his debut season he was on the bench as the Hawks accounted for North Melbourne in the grand final. Two years later, when the result was repeated, he played in his accustomed position on a wing. A rangy left footer, perhaps his greatest strength was his accurate disposal.
After the 1981 season Murnane indicated that he wished to cross to West Perth in the WAFL. Despite being reluctant to let him go, Hawthorn eventually relented and he went on to give the Falcons solid service in 36 games in 1982 and between 1985 and 1987, kicking 40 goals.
