Early in his time with Richmond Rex Hunt was used mainly as a key position forward before finding his niche at centre half back. Between 1968 and 1974 he played 113 VFL games and kicked 121 goals for the Tigers with his excellent overhead marking a particular asset. His kicking, however, was poor, which is probably one reason he was shunted to the backlines. A reserve in the 1969 grand final in which Richmond overcame Carlton he played in both the losing play-off of 1972 and the triumphant 1973 side. Midway through the 1974 season, following a transfer in his work as a policeman, he crossed to Geelong which meant he missed the chance to play in consecutive premiership teams.

Hunt's time with the Cats comprised 32 games in which he kicked 44 goals in 1974 and 1975. He then returned to the city and threw in his lot with St Kilda for whom he added a final 57 VFL games and 111 goals. 

After a year on the sidelines Rex Hunt played senior grade football for the last time with VFA side Sandringham in 1980 and 1981.

Following his retirement as a player Hunt became a highly respected football commentator on radio as well as a host of various football-related panel shows on TV.
