Robert Fox joined Essendon from Thornton and immediately impressed as a formidable presence in the forward lines. At the end of his debut season of 1955 he was accordingly awarded the Bombers’ best first year player award. However, he failed to progress, at least in part because of having difficulty adjusting to life in a big city. The last of his 52 VFL games was the 1957 grand final in which the Dons lowered their colours to Melbourne. He registered 34 goals. After spending the 1958 season playing for Alexandra he retired as a player, only to make a brief return with Katunga in the late 1960s.
