Adelaide-born Roland 'Rowley' Fischer was recruited by Melbourne from Murtoa and proved an excellent acquisition, playing 137 VFL games and kicking 34 goals for the club between 1933 and 1941. Despite his comparative shortness of stature (183cm) he was often used as a ruckman changing in defence, in which position he was a member in 1939 of Melbourne's grand final-winning team against Collingwood. He was prevented by injury from playing in Melbourne's 1940 and 1941 premiership-winning teams. Strong overhead, Fischer was also sometimes played at centre half forward. The high general esteem in which he was held is evidenced by the fact that he was selected to represent Victoria 5 times. His VFL career ended after the 1941 season when he joined the army.
