Ed Fay was a talented key position defender who might have achieved more in the game had he not lacked confidence and been prone to injury. He joined Essendon in 1932 after spending the previous five years at West Coburg and went on to play a total of 28 VFL games and kick one goal over the course of a three season stint. He then transferred to VFA side Brunswick where, judging by his success, he appears to have to have experienced a boost in confidence. In 1938, playing at full back, he was one of the best players afield in the Magpies’19.17 to 14.14 grand final defeat of Brighton. Three years later he rubber-stamped a fine career by winning the VFA Recorder Cup for best and fairest in the competition. His time with Brunswick saw him play a total of 125 games and score two goals from 1935 to 1941 and in 1946. He also represented the VFA twice in losing challenge matches against the VFL.
