Best remembered for entering the fray of the 1970 VFL grand final at the start of the third quarter and kicking four quick goals to turn the tide of the game. At the main break his team Carlton trailed Collingwood by 44 points but Hopkins' inspirational performance helped the Blues mount a dramatic comeback and eventually sneak home by 10 points. Hopkins' VFL career lasted only 29 games from 1968 to 1971 but there are plenty of 100 game players who have had less noteworthy impacts. Following the grand final Hopkins was selected in Carlton's round one team in 1971 after which he left the sport to pursue other interests.
