A highly capable centre half forward who combined pace with good aerial skills, Terry Gay was regarded as one of the recruits of the year when he debuted with Hawthorn in 1966. Quite thinly framed for a key position player at 188cm and 82.5kg, he compensated by virtue of his strength and tenacity. His five season Hawks career comprised 65 VFL games in which he scored 39 goals.
