Tom Ferguson was a tall utility who performed solidly at both ends of the ground. He joined Melbourne in 1942 from Richmond, where he had only played seconds football. At Melbourne he would also spend the majority of his time in the twos, and in 1943 he finished runner-up in the Gardiner Medal, the best and fairest award at that level. His senior career with the Demons comprised 14 appearances and eight goals in 1942-3.
After a two year stint of war service Ferguson resumed his VFL career with Hawthorn, where he enjoyed comparatively more prominence than at Melbourne. From 1946 to 1948 he played 52 games and scored 25 goals for the Hawks, as Hawthorn had been branded since 1943, after years as the Mayblooms.
