After winning a best and fairest award and playing in a winning grand final with the thirds in 1985 Allan McKellar made his senior debut with Richmond the following year. A utility, he perhaps produced his most effective football in defence. He enjoyed his best season in 1989 when he finished third in the Tigers’ best and fairest count and was the club’s highest vote getter, with 10, in the Brownlow. However, in 1990 he managed just four appearances for the year, resulting in his de-listing. Picked up by Footscray he failed to make a senior appearance in 1991 and once again had to nominate for the Pre-Season Draft. Sydney took a punt on him, but a shoulder injury restricted him to just a couple of appearances, and at the end of the 1992 season he was once again de-listed, bringing the curtain down on a career which failed to deliver as much as might have been expected.
