Recruited by Fitzroy from Old Melburnians, Audley Gillespie-Jones struggled to make his mark, and after playing just two VFL games in 1935 he returned to the amateurs. In 1937 he had a second and ultimately much more successful stab at league football with Fitzroy. Playing mainly on a half back flank he made 49 senior appearances and scored five goals from 1937 to 1942 and in 1945-6. With two seasons being lost to the war he missed the chance to play in the Roys’ 1944 premiership-winning team. In 1946 he captained Fitzroy’s reserves. He played as an amateur throughout his VFL career. A practising barrister, he later reported on football for “The Argus”.
