Billy King was a talented wingman who was a key player for South Melbourne between 1940 and 1948 during which time he played 136 VFL games and booted 17 goals. He was on the wing and one of South’s best players in the losing grand final of 1945 against Carlton. His fine and consistent play was recognised with inclusion in Victorian interstate teams in 1946 as well as at the 1947 Hobart carnival.
After leaving South King captain-coached Ovens and Murray League clubs Corowa (1949-50) and North Albury (1951-3). In 1949 he represented New South Wales in matches on the Sydney Cricket Ground against Western Australia and Victoria. He finished his playing career as captain coach of Howlong in the Hume Football League, winning the competition best and fairest award in 1956 at the age of thirty-six.
