Bob Farmer was a centre half forward who was capable of taking spectacular marks, but whose kicking sometimes let him down. He played at Collingwood from 1964 to 1969, but only in 1968 did he manage to hold down a regular senior place. He was rewarded by a place in that year’s overseas tour by the Galahs Gaelic football team. In 1970 Farmer transferred to SANFL club West Adelaide under the coaching of former Collingwood great Murray Weideman, but did not stay there beyond that season.
