Pacy, assured and with an unflappable air about him, Charlie Lilley was an excellent player for Melbourne before and after the first world war. Early in his career he played mainly in the centre, in which position he was rated one of the best in the league. Later he became a defender, with his pace and good judgement coming to the fore. Hailing from Elsternwick, he played a total of 152 games and kicked five goals for the Fuchsias between 1913 and 1915, and from 1919 to 1925. He was also a member of the Victorian team which won the 1914 Australian interstate championships in Sydney. During world war one Lilley took part in the famous AIF match in London in 1916.
