After eschewing his first sporting love, soccer, at the age of fourteen Chris Hercock quickly developed into a handy footballer at his school, Westminster College. After leaving school he joined Brighton and was persuaded by a friend to go for a run at Glenelg. He ended up being recruited by the club, and after a season in the reserves made his senior SANFL debut in 1976.
Used as a forward and run-on player at the outset of his career he was soon shifted to the backlines where he was resolute and close checking. He enjoyed a solid 1977 finals campaign playing in the back pocket but failed thereafter to fully establish himself, although he remained with the Bays until 1983. He was not selected in either the 1981 or 1982 grand finals which Glenelg lost to Port Adelaide and Norwood respectively. When retired he had played 95 SANFL games and kicked 29 goals.
