Like younger brother Doug, Garry Farrant was recruited by North Melbourne from Cohuna. He debuted with the Kangas in 1967 and impressed with his all round ability that saw him adapt well to a variety of positions. In 1971, however, he returned home to Cohuna, and spent the entire 1972 season away from the big league. The appointment of Ron Barassi as North coach in 1973 helped entice Farrant back to the club and he played on for another three seasons, ultimately playing a total of 138 VFL games and kicking 88 goals.
For much of his time under Barassi, Farrant played at centre half back where his pace and excellent kicking were utilised to good effect. He was at centre half back in North's losing grand final team of 1974 as well as in the victorious side the following year against Hawthorn. Having achieved the ultimate in football - participation in a premiership - Garry Farrant decided it was time to retire at the age of twenty-nine.
