An effective half back who was also sufficiently versatile to hold down full forward on occasion, Jack Giles was one of Sturt’s stand-out performers during a generally dismal time for the club. In 1941-2 and from 1946 to 1949 he played 95 SANFL games and kicked 30 goals, serving as team captain in his last season.
When military duties saw him living in Melbourne in 1943 he played one senior and six reserves matches for Richmond.
