Hailing from Oatlands in New South Wales Jack Hacker was a capable defender who could also take a turn in ruck. He gave South Melbourne useful service in 111 VFL games between 1937 and 1944. He booted 7 goals. In 1938 he won the club's most improved player award. A knee injury prevented him from playing football in 1945 and 1946. From 1947 he embarked on a series of coaching stints, steering Camperdown to a Hampden Football League grand final in 1947 and Shepparton to a premiership in the Central Goulburn Valley Football League two years later.
