Jack Hanley was a high leaping ruckman and forward who gave good service to three League clubs, beginning at South Adelaide where he played an unknown number of games before crossing to West Adelaide for whom he 34 games and kicked 24 goals in 1914-15 and 1919-20.
The 1921 season saw Hanley installed as the first League coach of the Glenelg Football Club where he enhanced his already fine reputation, gaining selection for the state on three occasions to add to his games played at the 1914 Sydney carnival. He spent four seasons with the newcomers, playing 54 of the 56 games played by them during that time. His tally of 36 goals in the black, yellow and red included a club list-topping 15 in 1922.
