Hailing from the famous football breeding ground of Assumption College, Footscray's Jim Gallagher was a relentless, extremely determined half back flanker who played the game close and hard. His reluctance to take risks is evidenced by his failure to kick a single goal during the course of his 10-season, 151-game VFL career. A VFL interstate representative in 1954, he was on his customary half back flank at the end of the same year when Footscray broke through for a first ever VFL premiership with a 15.12 (102) to 7.9 (51) Grand Final defeat of Melbourne.
