Joe Kelly was a highly talented, elusive wingman from Old Xaverians who served Carlton well in 137 VFL games between 1926 and 1934. A left footer, he was a particularly proficient exponent of the drop kick. His tremendous speed and great anticipation frequently enabled him to gain possession of the ball in space, and he invariably used it to good effect, often after an exhilarating, swerving run. Kelly was on the wing when Carlton went down by nine points against Richmond in the 1932 VFL Grand Final.
