John Yeates was a highly capable ruckman and forward who seemed to have the happy knack of being able to chip in with a goal when it was most needed. Slimly built and tall at 83 kg and 196cm he coped well with the hurly burly of ruck work and was a fine field mark. Geelong recruited him from West Gambier and he made his senior VFL debut in 1959 before going on to play a total of 86 games over the course of an injury-impaired seven-season league career. He skippered the Cats in 1962, and was a member the following year of their Grand Final winning team against Hawthorn.
