Son of former Glenelg great Don Hewett, Mark Hewett was recruited not by the Tigers, but by West Torrens. Exhilarating to watch when at full throttle, he was ideally suited to a wing, which was where he played most of his football, although he could also do a decent job as a forward.
In 1982, after 74 SANFL games and 61 goals for Torrens, Hewett realised his ambition of following in his father’s footsteps and joining Glenelg, where he spent the ensuing nine seasons. Although his time with the Bays saw him miss many matches through injury he still managed to register 114 games and 57 goals. In the twilight of his career he hit a purple patch in terms of form and was a key member, on a wing, of the Glenelg sides which played off in the 1987 and 1988 grand finals, only to lose to North Adelaide and Port Adelaide respectively.
