Regarded by some as among the finest Tasmanian footballers never to have played in the V/AFL, Max Griffiths might have been even more widely feted had he not ‘gone bush’ to play football while still at his peak. His New Town/Glenorchy career spanned the years 1953 to 1962 during which he played 122 games, including the winning grand finals of 1953 against Sandy Bay, 1956 against North Hobart and 1958 over Sandy Bay. A carnival player in 1956 and 1958 he represented Tasmania 10 times all told. As a forward, he excelled at bringing others into the play, but he still managed to top the Magpies’ list of goal kickers on a couple of occasions. He also won a club best and fairest in 1959. After a brief spell with NWFU side Latrobe he retired to country football. Griffiths is a player member of the AFL Tasmania Hall of Fame.
