A tall (193cm) defender and occasional forward or ruckman, Michael McCarthy joined Hawthorn from Frankston YCW and was a member of the club’s 1978 and 1983 premiership-winning teams, although he spent the whole of the former match warming the bench. He also played in the losing grand final sides of 1984 and 1985. After 99 VFL games and 65 goals for the Hawks between 1978 and 1986 he was a key inaugural signing for the Brisbane Bears for whom he added 27 games and nine goals in 1987-8.
