After being rejected by Melbourne Owen Evans was picked up by South Melbourne in 1935, and, after making just one appearance in his debut season, became a regular senior player the following year. Most of his football was played as a forward. In the 1936 grand final loss to Collingwood he lined up on a half forward flank and was listed among his side’s best players. He also kicked a goal.

In 1941, after playing 54 VFL games and scoring 95 goals for South, Evans crossed to Coburg in the VFA without a clearance. He spent just a single season with the Lions, playing 10 games and scored 12 goals. He later spent the 1947 season playing for Launceston-based NTFA club City.
