Less famous and arguably less talented than his father Jack and brother Robert, Peter Oatey was nevertheless a useful footballer who might well have achieved more had he been able to continue playing longer than he did. Early in his career, which commenced in 1965, hge played mainly as a half forward flanker, but after Haydn Bunton junior, the Redlegs’ first rover, crossed to Western Australia he assumed roving duties alongside brother Robert, although not before he had missed the entire 1967 season because of an injury sustained in a trial game at the start of the year. Peter Oatey was also a capable centreman when required. His SANFL career, which ended in 1972, comprised 120 games in which he kicked 110 goals.
