From Castlemaine, Rod Keogh struggled to have an impact at Melbourne, playing just 22 games and scoring eight goals from 1989 to 1993. At the same time he won a reserves best and fairest award and the 1990 and 1993 Gardiner Medals. It was after crossing to St Kilda in 1994 that he showed glimpses of his real ability. A tough, muscular midfielder, he took no prisoners with his approach, something which earned him the ardent admiration of the Saints faithful. His 60 AFL games in five seasons with the club included the losing 1997 grand final against Adelaide.

After leaving St Kilda Keogh captain-coached Devon Meadows, and after that was a player coach with North Launceston.
