From the South Bendigo Football Club, where he played in 1927 and 1928, Wyn Murray was recruited by Melbourne, and made his VFL debut in the opening round of the 1929 season. He spent half a dozen seasons with the Redlegs, playing 65 games and scoring four goals. Most of his football was played as a half back flanker, including his one interstate appearance against South Australia at the Sydney carnival in 1933.
From 1934 to 1940 Murray played 61 VFA games without kicking a goal for Preston, whom he captain-coached for a short time. He also played for a VFA representative team in 1937.
