Match Report
Essendon made certain of its place in the 2014 finals with a hard-fought win over Gold Coast at Docklands on Saturday. Only the extremely unlikely round-23 combination of a Essendon losing by a huge margin to Carlton and Collingwood winning by a huge margin against Hawthorn could see the Dons slip out of the eight. Conversely, Gold Coast's loss means that the Suns face a virtually impossible task to climb back into the top eight. They would need to defeat West Coast by a very large margin, and hope that Richmond, Collingwood and Adelaide all lose in round 23.
The Bombers led by a goal after a relatively even first quarter, and extended that lead to an even three goals at half time, before a big third quarter effort saw the Suns get within a point late in he term. The Dons recovered to lead by seven at the last change but Gold Coast came out firing in the last quarter ands led by six points after Tom Lynch goaled at the 11-minute mark. But Essendon finished strongly, kicking five of the last six goals to sneak home by 19 points.
Michael Hurley was excellent for the victors, with 12 marks and 27 disposals, while Brendon Goddard (28 possessions, nine marks) and Paddy Ryder (44 hitouts and two goals) also played vital roles in the win. For the Suns, David Swallow (27 touches and eight tackles) was a standout, with Dion Prestia (28 disposals and seven tackles) and Jaeger O'Meara (24 possessions and seven marks) also fine contributors.
