Alan Rowarth joined Melbourne in 1958 after winning the Polwarth Football League best and fairest award whilst playing for Birregurra. After making 10 senior appearances in his debut season with the Demons he established himself as a regular in the side in 1959 and 1960, both of which seasons were capped by premiership victories. In the 1959 grand final defeat of Essendon he was a useful contributor, kicking four goals from full forward.
Rowarth continued at Melbourne until 1963, ultimately playing 70 VFL games and scoring 90 goals. His goal tally would undoubtedly have been quite a bit higher but for the fact that he often played as a decoy full forward, sacrificing his own game so that others could garner the goals and the glory. After leaving the Demons he joined Mildura of the Sunraysia Football League.
