Having played for Richmond reserves and Burnley Alf Benison was recruited by South Melbourne and made his senior VFL debut in round 15 of the 1939 season. For most of his league career he was a fringe player, with his best season coming in 1942 when he played 16 games. Early in the 1944 season, having made 42 appearances and scored 32 goals for South, he transferred to Footscray where he added a final nine appearances and six goals.
