Quite tall at 188cm, and of fairly solid build at 89kg, Allan Bartlett played for most of his career as a defender, although he was perfectly capable of making a nuisance of himself in the forward lines on occasion. As a player he was dogged, wholeheartedly committed and reliable, besides boasting good disposal skills by both foot and hand. He began with Glenelg in 1989, and when he retired after the 1999 first semi final loss to Norwood he had played 201 SANFL games for the Tigers and registered 92 goals.
The closest Bartlett came to achieving premiership success was playing in the losing grand finals of 1990 and 1992, both against Port Adelaide. In 1991 he was an inaugural Adelaide Crows player and made 11 appearances and kicked three goals for the year before being de-listed.
