After joining Geelong from Echuca Andy Preston proved a valuable acquisition over the course of 58 VFL games from 1977 to 1981, in which he registered 13 goals. Playing mainly either on a wing or half forward/back flank he exhibited great courage combined with sure ball handling skills and a penchant for embarking on long, surging runs into attack. He was noted as a strong tackler and was capable of kicking long. In both 1980 and 1981 he played mostly reserves football and was a member of Cats premiership teams at that level in both years.
In 1982 he crossed to Richmond, where he produced some good football, but was blighted by hamstring problems. He played 18 games and scored six goals for the Tigers in 1982-3. He later played two games for Footscray in 1986 and also played reserves football for Collingwood.
