Archie Snell had played in the VFA with Brunswick (14 games, four goals in 1897-8 and 1902) West Melbourne (17 games, 11 goals, 1899), Williamstown and Brunswick before he commenced in the VFL with Carlton, aged 24, in 1902. From that year until 1907 he played 92 games and kicked 56 goals for the Blues.
A rover, he was tricky and elusive, and particularly effective in wet weather. He can be considered singularly unfortunate in that he did not get to play in both Carlton’s 1906 and 1907 premiership-winning teams. In the former year he was dropped from the side ahead of the finals, while in the latter year he had already retired as a player.
That ‘retirement’ proved to be only temporary as in 1908 he was persuaded to make a comeback with Essendon. However, after just a single appearance for the Same Old he decided that enough was enough, and this time retired for good.
