A pacy wingman who was a beautiful kick on the run, Barry Capuano joined Essendon from North Essendon Methodists and, after progressing through the grades, made his senior debut in 1959. At the end of his debut season he was a member of the Bombers side which lowered its colours to Melbourne in the grand final. Three years later another grand final appearance ended in celebration as the Dons overpowered Carlton, with Capuano among the victors' best players. When Essendon next reached the grand final in 1965, however, Capuano was sidelined with injury.
Between 1959 and 1966 Barry Capuano played 118 VFL games and kicked 16 goals for Essendon. He also played interstate football for Victoria in 1963. After retiring as a player he had captain-coaching stints at Mitcham and Eltham, steering the latter team to successive Diamond Valley Football League premierships in 1969-70. He later had a spell as non-playing coach of Stawell. He also served Essendon at various times as a committeeman, General Manager and Chief Executive. He also worked for the AFL but left his position under something of a cloud amidst controversy about Waverley Park.
