Having played mostly as a forward as a youngster, with considerable success, Brian Winton was transformed into a defender by Richmond when he went there in 1983. After playing 10 VFL games and scoring three goals for the season he was transferred to Essendon where he was very much a fringe player as the Bombers stamped themselves as the foremost club in the competition. In five seasons with Essendon, Winton managed just 32 appearances, whilst scoring four goals. His last port of call in the VFL was St Kilda, where he added a final five games and four goals in 1989. After leaving the Saints he had stints in the VFA with Prahran (20 games, 18 goals in 1992-3) and Sandringham (14 games, 15 goals, 1994-5).
