Originally from Jamestown Clarrie Curyer was a talented back pocket player who was also a useful on-baller when required. He played 33 SANFL games for Norwood in 1932 and 1933 and his form in the latter season was so good he was selected to represent South Australia at that year's Sydney carnival where he attracted the attention of officials from St Kilda. The upshot was that Curyer sought a clearance to the Saints and when this was refused he opted to stand out of football for a year in order to get his way. The VFL phase of his career between 1935 and 1941 saw him play 104 games and kick 58 goals. He was a skilful and highly determined footballer who continued to perform well after crossing to Preston in the VFA during the 1941 season.
