Whilst playing under 19s football with Essendon in 1985 David Johnston was a member of Victoria’s Teal Cup squad. He made his senior league debut in 1987 and showed real promise, playing mainly as a defender. Over the remainder of his career he proved his adaptability by undertaking a variety of commissions, but he was arguably still best suited to a defensive role.
After 41 games and six goals for the Bombers without really establishing himself Johnston crossed to Fitzroy in 1993 and added a final 25 games and one goal to his career tallies over a three season stint.
